Prezentowana książka to pierwszy pełny przekład polski Understanding Cultures through Their Key Words. English, Russian, Polish, German, and Japanese, wydanej przez Oxford University Press w 1997 roku, będącej próbą przekrojowego spojrzenia na kulturę (tradycje, wartości, sposób myślenia o świecie) różnych grup etnicznych poprzez języki używane przez te grupy. Najważniejsze założenie tej książki, jak i innych etnolingwistycznych książek Anny Wierzbickiej, jest takie, że kultura danego narodu odzwierciedla się w jego języku i że objaśniając kluczowe słowa danej kultury możemy zrozumieć tę kulturę. Książka zainteresuje studentów kierunków filologicznych i kulturoznawstwa, a także innych kierunków humanistycznych; z powodzeniem będzie ona służyć jako podręcznik akademicki. The presented book is the first full Polish translation of Understanding Cultures through Their Key Words. English, Russian, Polish, German, and Japanese, published by Oxford University Press in 1997, which is an attempt at a cross-sectional look at the culture (traditions, values, way of thinking about the world) of various ethnic groups through the languages ​​used by these groups. The most important assumption of this book, as well as of other ethnolinguistic books by Anna Wierzbicka, is that the culture of a given nation is reflected in its language and that by explaining the key words of a given culture, we can understand this culture. The book will be of interest to students of philology and cultural studies, as well as other humanities; it will be successfully used as an academic textbook.
